What is the SACE and How Does It Work?

The South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) is the qualification students work towards in Years 11 and 12. It prepares students for university, training, apprenticeships, or employment.
The SACE is made up of two stages:
  • Stage 1 (usually completed in Year 11)
  • Stage 2 (usually completed in Year 12)
To achieve the SACE, students must gain 200 credits through a combination of compulsory and free-choice subjects and courses.
Student work is assessed using an A–E grading scale in Stage 1 and an A+–E– grading scale in Stage 2, supported by rigorous quality assurance processes.
To be awarded the certificate, students must achieve a C grade or better in the compulsory Stage 1 subjects:
  • Exploring Identities and Futures
  • English
  • Mathematics
Students must also achieve a C– grade or better in:
  • 60 credits of Stage 2 subjects
  • Activating Identities and Futures
